Young carers
Service outline:
Young carers are children or young people under 18 years of age who look after someone in their family who has an long term illness, a disability, a mental health problem or a substance misuse problem. They may be taking on practical and/or emotional caring responsibilities that an adult would normally do.
The degree of responsibility will vary greatly, but in some cases, young carers may be harmed by the expectations placed upon them. Like all carers they need recognition, guidance and support. It is important to remember that young carers are children first and carers second. Young carers have the same rights as other carers.
