As part of her prize she won this opportunity to have a solo exhibition within Ribble Valley.
"I have always loved to draw and paint and making things in general. I would have loved to have been trained as an artist, but got sidetracked into teaching infants instead. Throughout a long career in primary education, I used to dream of the day when I could retire, and paint! And five years ago, I did just that, except of course that retirement is not one long holiday of free time, as I had imagined, and as any retired person will confirm. Nevertheless, I have spent what free time I have had to learning about painting, and trying to improve what skills I have. I am mainly self-taught, and have tried as many different ways of producing an image as I can think of, oils, acrylics, computer generated pictures, but always come back to watercolours, as being the most beautiful. I love the transparency and the way the paint is so unpredictable. All watercolourists will understand when I say that most of my best efforts have been 'happy accidents'.
After completing a City and Guilds Course in fashion design, I became fascinated by fabrics. I have recently become a member of the Embroiderers Guild, and am developing my embroidery skills.
My main interest now is to capture a visual experience using paints, fabrics and stitches. I like to sketch outdoors, unless anyone is watching, when I take a photograph and retreat to my little attic studio in Eshton Terrace. (From my window I am lucky enough to be able to see Clitheroe Castle, Pendle Hill and a lovely old mill chimney). I then try to develop the idea using my sewing machine and a huge stash of fabrics and threads.
My sketchbooks over many years are filled with memories of the places I have seen, flowers, birds, people - and the only thing I miss from my native Northumberland after living happily in the beautiful Ribble Valley for many years - the sea!"Glen Purchase
