Prosecution for Benefit Fraud
Ribble Valley Borough Council has successfully prosecuted a resident for falsely claiming housing and council tax benefit.
The woman was ordered to repay £3,002.55 at Hyndburn Magistrates' Court on 10 November 2010.
The woman falsely claimed housing benefit of £2,311.82 between 8 December 2008 and 21 June 2009 and council tax benefit of £690.73 between 8 September 2008 and 5 July 2009 after failing to inform Ribble Valley Borough Council that her circumstances had changed.
The offence came to light as a result of the National Fraud Initiative, a data matching exercise that takes place between local government and other parts of the public sector.
The woman was sentenced to 120 hours community service and ordered to pay £200 costs. She must repay the benefits to which she was not entitled.
The Council takes benefit fraud very seriously.
