17th May - 12th July 2008

Gallery open Monday - Saturday 10am - 4.30pm.
Closed bank holiday Monday.

Platform Gallery exhibition, Northern Glass is a selected showcase of the best contemporary glass being produced in the North of the UK, bringing together internationally recognised artists from the North East and Cumbria, across Yorkshire to Lancashire and down to Cheshire and Derbyshire.

The exhibition explores the different approaches to contemporary studio glass practice and the wealth of techniques employed in contemporary glass making.

Gillies Jones will show a selection of their classic signature bowls, plus one of their stunning unique 'Aesculus' pieces. Also working in hot glass, Charlie Macpherson and Amanda Notarianni's work makes the most of cold working techniques to highlight the luscious organic forms.

Richly textured and coloured architectural glass by Jo Vincent shows how the material can add warmth and light to an interior, whilst Louise Watson's kiln formed hinged glass panels push the material to its limits.

Jessamy Kelly & Joanne Mitchell will show individual studio pieces as well as their collaborative wall pieces as Juo Glass and Kathryn Pearce will be showing a new range of work developed after her recent move to Scotland.

Ruth Moilliet's sand blasted and laminated glass panels, fabricated in partnership with glass manufacturers in the North West, show the unison of the artist's vision with technical innovation.

Recent graduate Helen Tiffany explores the transparency of glass with her tiny cast slides and light boxes, creating abstract images viewed as large-scale projections. The sustainable potential of the material is investigated in Jude Stoll's installations whilst Victoria Scholes' sculptures exploit the fragility of glass to explore the tension between the everyday and the extraordinary.

Sarah Walmsley creates blown and cut forms which make strong statement pieces, whilst Kathryn Wightman (pictured) uses a sumptuous colour palette to emphasise her playful 'I am' pods and lively twisted forms.

Small-scale production is represented by Yorkshire's Sanders & Wallace and the Glass Studio, Denby, whilst both studios take the opportunity to show individual one-off works. Sly Glass are also represented with their jewel-like bottles and vessels, as well as showcasing their larger scale figurative wall pieces.

This stunning selection of work will be brought together in the light, airy and contemporary exhibition space at the Platform Gallery in Clitheroe, the centre for contemporary craft in Lancashire, operated by Ribble Valley Borough Council. Most work will be for sale and the gallery operates the OWN ART purchasing scheme.
