THE High Sheriff of Lancashire has issued a "£500 Challenge" to schools and community groups as part of a massive scheme to restore Clitheroe Castle and Museum.

Peter Robinson has called on Ribble Valley groups to throw their weight behind the Clitheroe Castle Heritage Scheme.

The £3.2million scheme, spearheaded by Ribble Valley Borough Council, is the biggest heritage project in the North West and aims to position Clitheroe Castle and Museum as a major visitor attraction.

The former chief executive of the Blackburn with Darwen Partnership said the support of community groups and schools was vital.

"I can't stress how important the support of every level of the community is to us. We want the scheme to be a true community endeavour and I am calling on everyone, from workplaces and schools to clubs and service groups, to get involved. The Clitheroe Castle Heritage Scheme is the most exciting and ambitious heritage project in Ribble Valley to date and together we can make it happen."

Your chance to leave a lasting legacy

The Friends of Clitheroe Castle, the community wing of the Clitheroe Castle Heritage Scheme, will spearhead the £500 Challenge. Participants are being asked to raise the funds from a variety of activities and the more creative the better.

Rebecca Kay, Ribble Valley Borough Council's tourism and arts officer said: "The opportunities for fundraising are endless, from non-uniform days and summer fetes, to raffles and tombolas. Every person counts in Ribble Valley and we want this to be a true community effort."

Every group/individual who raises over £500 will secure a mention on a special wall in the museum set aside specifically for this purpose, which will be displayed for generations to come.
