Ribble Valley Borough Council

Private Water Supplies

Sampling of Private Water Supplies

Under the Private Water Supplies Regulations 2009, Ribble Valley Borough Council is obliged to sample the quality of private water supplies.  A private water supply is water obtained from a borehole, spring, well or stream, in other words not from the mains supply.

The Regulations set out the frequency of sampling, depending on the size and use of the supply.  For example, a supply serving a cafe will be tested more frequently than a small domestic supply.

The Council charges for work done to ensure the safety of private water supplies.  Please see the full list of fees.

You will usually be notified of the results within 7 days for bacteriological tests and within 14 days for chemical tests.

If you would like to arrange for a private water supply to be tested, please call the contact centre on 01200 425111 or email matthew.riding@ribblevalley.gov.uk
