Abandoned vehicles are an increasing problem across the country, and the cost to Local Authorities for dealing with the issue is escalating on an annual basis.
Local Authorities are responsible for the removal and destruction of vehicles abandoned within their Boroughs. However, there are certain limitations to this.
Abandoned vehicle complaints can only be taken from the Police, as they will carry out the relevant initial checks to ensure the vehicle has not been reported stolen, or involved in a crime. Therefore, if you suspect a vehicle has been abandoned you must notify the matter to your local police station Tel 01254 51212. If they can confirm the vehicle has no registered keeper, they will forward the details to ourselves.
We must then serve a notice on the vehicle and, after the prescribed period has expired, arrange for its removal by our contractor.
If the vehicle is on private land we must have the land owners permission to remove the vehicle and this can often result in a delay.
