Castle's Commemorative Sausage
THIS weekend's opening of the new-look Clitheroe Castle Museum looks set to be a sizzling success thanks to a commemorative sausage.
As well as a £3.5million facelift, Clitheroe Castle now has its own sausage thanks to Cowman's Famous Sausage Shop of Clitheroe.
The sausage, which features wild boar, pork, black pudding and mead, as well as secret herbs and spices, has been devised by Cowman's proprietor Cliff Cowburn and his award-winning team to commemorate the museum's opening after a two-year refurbishment.
The refurbishment, funded by Ribble Valley Borough Council, the Heritage Lottery Fund, North West Development Agency, SITA Trust and several private sector partners and community groups, features a glass atrium linking the museum and North West Sound Archives on two levels, a café, exhibition space, interactive display facilities and education suite, as well as several exhibitions depicting the history of Ribble Valley.
Clitheroe Castle has dominated the Ribble Valley skyline since its construction in the 12th Century by Robert de Lacy to protect the administrative centre of his vast estates and Cliff's new recipe takes the Norman diet to a new high.
Cliff said: "Our sausage-making team have worked hard to devise the sausage, which we believe has an authentic Norman taste.
"It features wild boar, which would have run free in the 12th Century, and pork. It also features mead, a traditional celebratory drink made from honey, as well as secret herbs and spices.
"The re-opening of the Clitheroe Castle Museum is a proud day for Clitheroe and Cowman's is delighted to be involved in such a historic event."
Cowman's Famous Sausage Shop has been situated in Castle Street, Clitheroe, for over 100 years and produces award-winning sausages using only the finest local and free-range ingredients.
The sausage will be available at Cowman's or as a dish on the menu at the Clitheroe Castle Caffetessen.
Ends.
