The Local Development Framework

Whats does LDF stand for?

The Planning and Compensation Act 2004 introduced a new system for developing planning policy. Instead of the old style Local Plan, a fairly wieldy and cumbersome document covering all aspects of planning policy, a Local Development Framework (LDF) will be put in its place.

The LDF will consist of a number of themed documents called Development Plan Documents (DPD). These will contain land-use policies, with an explanation of why those policies have been developed and how they are intended to work.

Maps showing policies apply to which areas will be produced to give a visual context to the text-based documents. This will make it clearer to see exactly which policies and/or proposals affect a particular site or property within the Borough.

Additional guidance will be prepared in the form of Supplementary Planning Documents (SPD) to further explain policies contained in the DPD's.

The Local Development Scheme (LDS) is a document which sets out what DPD's and SPD's will be prepared and their respective timetables for preparation. The documents set out in the current adopted LDS are expected to be in place by the end of 2008. Revisions to the LDS will be made annually to take into account changing circumstances and to ensure there is a three year rolling programme at all times. These revisions may include a change in the timescale for one or more documents, or it could bring forward or add documents.
