Delicate Matters by Hillu Liebelt
Main gallery
24 January - 7 March 2009
Following a visit to Japan in 2006 Hillu Liebelt has produced a new series of work which was first shown in Japan in October / November 2008 as a solo exhibition at the 'Centre for Cultural Exchange' in Katsuyama, Okayama Prefecture.
The exhibition, entitled DELICATE MATTERS , coincided with an artist's residency and marked the beginning of a tour which will continue in the United Kingdom in 2009. This touring exhibition was made possible by a generous grant from Arts Council England
DELICATE MATTERS will first be shown at the PLATFORM GALLERY in Clitheroe / Lancashire and can then be seen at BLACK SWAN ARTS in Frome / Somerset from 9 May to the 13 June 2009.
DELICATE MATTERS presents a mixture of tapestries and textile sculptures, a new avenue for the artist in her attempts at refining her tapestry work and develop delicate installations and sculptural objects. Using materials like fragile silk cocoons, thin stainless steel wires and natural stone for her installations has become a new challenge. In the centre of the exhibition will be a piece called DANCE : a mass of 1000 nodding heads on short wire stems which move gently while you walk past.
DELICATE MATTERS is about fleeting moments, observations, the process of seeing, feeling, reflecting. It is also about line and shape, an exercise in simplicity, rhythmic tension and repetition.
