Ribble Valley Borough Council is taking recycling to the streets thanks to nifty new litterbins.

Four of the bins, which have separate sections for recyclables, such as glass, cans and plastic bottles, and general waste, have been trialled in Clitheroe, Ribchester and Longridge.

They have proved so popular that the council has successfully bid for £15,000 from Lancashire County Council's Waste Minimisation Fund to fund a further 28.

The bins aim to build on the success of the council's recycling and refuse collection service, which has seen householders receive two or three wheeled bins over the last couple of years.

The response to the scheme has been phenomenal, with tonnes of waste being diverted from landfill and recycled.

Simon Hore, vice-chairman of Ribble Valley Borough Council's community committee, said: "Our recycling and refuse collection scheme has been a great success, with tonnes of glass jars and bottles, food and drinks cans, plastic bottles and aluminium foil, diverted from landfill.

"Now we want to build on that success by making it possible for people to recycle using litterbins."

It is hoped the new litterbins, which are the same colours as wheelie bins - blue for recyclables and burgundy for general waste - will be in place across the borough by the end of the year.
