Cold Call Warning about Council Tax Refunds
Published Thursday 28th February 13
Ribble Valley residents are being warned about a company offering to get their council tax band lowered for a fee.
The company has been cold calling in Ribble Valley claiming to be able to save them cash on their council tax.
But residents can get their council tax rebanded for free, Ribble Valley Borough Council has pointed out.
The council's head of revenues and benefits, Mark Edmondson, said: "People believe the company might be working on behalf of the council, or the Valuation Office Agency, but this is not the case.
"We have been told the company is charging an up-front fee, followed by a success fee based on any saving achieved, but council taxpayers can appeal to the Valuation Office Agency to have their council tax band reviewed for free.
"If people think their house is in the wrong council tax band, they should contact the Valuation Office Agency themselves. They don't need a company to do it for them."
If you think your council tax banding is wrong, visit the Valuation Office Agency website www.voa.gov.uk or contact the Preston Valuation Office Agency office on 03000 501501.
