Platform Gallery 2017 Exhibition and Event Programme
Everyday Objects: More of the Same
A Touring Show by Jason Taylor
29 July – 7 October 2017
Back in 2011, designer Jason Taylor set himself an epic challenge – to design and make a new thing every day of the year throughout 2012. Working with mundane, mass-produced objects that populate our everyday lives, Jason tinkered with familiar items to create something entirely original and new.
Reimagining their function, objects were given fresh uses and different meanings. Some interventions meant he extended the lifecycle of throwaway products; others transformed disposable bits and bobs into sculptural works of art. Matchsticks, IKEA Billy Bookcases, cheese graters, biros, all adapted into something never seen before - this is a playful show full of humour, variety and surprises!
The process was enormously productive and rewarding - five years later, the results of this project are not only still touring, but still evolving.
The Platform Gallery is pleased to be able to share the latest iteration of the show, sharing Jason’s latest experiments and approach to making – we hope to inspire visitors to look anew at their own everyday objects, and rethink how they use such stuff of a throwaway society.
Accompanying the show there will be a pop-up shop where visitors can purchase souvenirs and gifts made by Jason. We are also running a series of drop-in workshops where visitors are welcome to experiment and discover the joy of making
There is also a family-friendly activity area full of ideas of things to make, objects to play with and an opportunity to be part of the show itself – exhibit your creation on our plinth, take a photo and share it with the world using the hashtag #EverydayObjects
We will be opening the exhibition at 12 noon on Saturday 29 July 2017 – Jason will be here in person to take us around the show, demonstrate his process and help visitors have a go themselves in a drop-in workshop – all are welcome to attend!
Join us this summer at a drop-in demonstration where you can meet the maker Jason Taylor, explore the show and design your own everyday object to take home!
Saturday 29 July: 12 – 4 pm
