Swimmers Dive into Special Sessions at Ribblesdale PoolPublished Thursday, 30 May 2019
Ribblesdale Pool in Clitheroe is making a splash with a series of special swimming sessions aimed at marginalised groups.
The sessions, which have been warmly welcomed, are designed specifically for people with dementia and their carers, parents and toddlers, adult beginner swimmers and anyone who is currently inactive.
Plans are also in the pipeline to offer high-intensity aqua-fit classes, poolside training for primary school teachers and guided tours for first-time pool-users.
Colin Winterbottom, Ribble Valley Borough Council’s community leisure and sports development manager, said: “Water can support up to ninety per cent of the body’s weight, meaning those with disabilities, injuries or illnesses, such as arthritis, can take part in sport in a comfortable and safe environment.
“The sensation of being in water can be calming, soothing and stress-reducing, and learning to swim early has numerous benefits, including boosting physical and mental wellbeing, confidence and coordination, and promoting bonding between parents and their children.
“We want to make swimming available to a wider variety of our residents and are liaising with people with dementia and their carers, parents and beginner swimmers, on how their pool-usage might be enhanced and developed.”
In 2017, Ribblesdale Pool – which is owned and run by Ribble Valley Borough Council – received a £250,000 refurbishment featuring changing rooms for the disabled and families, a brighter environment and more user-friendly waiting and refreshment areas.
It hosts nearly 50 sessions a week, including lane, public, social, mobility and women-only swims, and aqua fitness classes, and is available for children’s parties.
Ribblesdale Pool is part of the Edisford Sports Complex featuring Roefield Leisure Centre, the Ribble Valley Tennis Centre and a £1.4million multi-sports area funded by Ribble Valley Borough Council currently under construction.
