EU Settlement Scheme: One Year to go Until DeadlinePublished Tuesday, 07 July 2020
European citizens living and working in Ribble Valley have a year left to apply to the EU Settlement Scheme if they want to remain in the UK.
There have been more than 3.6 million applications to the scheme, which allows EU, EEA or Swiss citizens living in the UK to request permission to stay following Britain’s withdrawal from the European Union, commonly called Brexit.
If your application to the EU Settlement Scheme is successful, you will be able to continue living and working in the UK after 30 June 2021.
You will be given settled or pre-settled status, depending on how long you have been a UK resident – settled status if you started living here before 31 December 2020 and have five years’ continuous residence, or pre-settled status if you started living here by 31 December, but do not have five years’ continuous residence.
If you are given pre-settled status, you will be able to apply for settled status as soon as you have five years’ continuous residence.
Once you have settled or pre-settled status, you can work in the UK, use the NHS for free, enrol in education or continue studying, access public funds – such as benefits and pensions, if you are eligible – and travel in and out of the country.
The deadline for applications to the EU Settlement Scheme is 30 June 2021 and for further details or to apply visit gov.uk.
