Beauty of Mathematics at the Platform Gallery

Published Tuesday, 21 January 2014

A National touring exhibition showcasing the beauty of mathematics opens at the Platform Gallery, Clitheroe, this Saturday (25 January).

The exhibition, called Beauty is the First Test, features textiles, sculptures and drawings that reveal how craft techniques such as knotting, interlacing, stitching, counting, hooking, measuring and cutting are guided by mathematical theories.

The exhibition's curator, UK craft and textiles specialist Liz Cooper, will be on hand from noon to 2.00pm to discuss the exhibition and answer questions.

The title of the exhibition is from an essay published in 1940 by mathematician G. H. Hardy: "The mathematician's patterns, like the painter's or the poet's, must be beautiful. The ideas, like colours or words, must fit together in a harmonious way. Beauty is the first test: there is no permanent place in the world for ugly mathematics."

Platform Gallery supervisor Dominique Dunand-Clarke said: "The exhibition draws together existing and new art works to invite an in-depth consideration of mathematics and art.

"Beauty and playfulness will be evident in the exhibits to illustrate what delights craftspeople and maths geeks alike."

The Platform Gallery and Visitor and Information Centre in Station Road is run by Ribble Valley Borough Council and is a one-stop shop for visitors and art and craft enthusiasts, with the latest information on events and accommodation, a shop selling maps, souvenirs and craftwork by local and national artists, and a gallery exhibiting the best contemporary art and hosting workshops throughout the year.

The gallery's main exhibition space presents an annual program of exhibitions featuring textiles, ceramics, jewellery, glass and metalwork by nationally recognised and Lancashire-based designers and makers.

All purchases between £100 and £2,000 can be purchased through Own Art, an interest-free purchasing scheme.

The gallery is open Monday to Friday 9.00am to 5.00pm and on Saturdays 10.00am to 4.30pm.

Beauty is the First Test runs from 25 January to 19 April.
