Best Foot Forward for Beginner Walkers

Published Monday, 28 April 2014

A popular walking programme that has helped hundreds of Ribble Valley residents to health and fitness has launched a new programme for “absolute beginners.”

Stepping Out, run by Ribble Valley Borough Council and funded by the NHS, started eight years ago and now sees over 100 walkers, from beginner ramblers to hardened hikers, take to the borough’s highways and byways every week in a range of treks between one and seven miles.

The scheme also offers Tramper Treks for people with restricted mobility and a series of “prambles” for people with pushchairs.

Now a series of gentle walks for people with reduced mobility or balance, or who might not be confident to walk on their own, has been launched.

The walks, called Getting Started, will last about 15 to 30 minutes and leave the Platform Gallery in Station Road, Clitheroe, at 10.30am every Tuesday, starting on 6 May.

Stepping Out coordinator Barrie Williams said: “Getting Started is ideal for people who are new to walking, or might not be confident to walk on their own.

“The walks are led by people who are trained in first aid and sensitive to the needs of participants with restricted mobility.”
