Charity Endurance Marathon

Published Thursday, 19 June 2014

A Clitheroe musician is to undertake a gruelling endurance marathon to raise cash for charity.

What’s more, after the tough trek she will take to the stage in Clitheroe with a top line-up.

Violinist and multi-instrumentalist Gaynor Sutcliffe will run 177 miles in five days in aid of the Friends of Chernobyl Children.

She will run the notorious Offa’s Dyke, which follows the English-Welsh border from Prestatyn to Chepstow, in July.

She aims to run a gruelling 36 miles a day over five days with fellow musician Joy Hunter from Chorley, with Lancashire dialect specialist Sid Calderbank of Euxton driving the support vehicle.

The tough trek run starts in Prestatyn on Friday 25 July, and finishes in Chepstow on Tuesday 29 July.

It will be followed on Thursday 31 July, by a night of swing, ceilidh and good time music headlined by Gaynor’s band, the Western Valley Hot Club, with special guests Eric Ainsworth and Phil Knight, at the St Michael and St John’s Social Centre in Lowergate, Clitheroe.

Offa’s Dyke traverses the Clwydian and Shropshire Hills, Black Mountains and banks of the Severn and Wye rivers.

Gaynor, who was named Musician of the Year at the 2011 British Country Music Awards for her outstanding ability on violin, piano accordion, keyboard, double bass and trombone, is no newcomer to charity treks.

In 2013 she cycled 1,000 miles from Land’s End to John O Groats, raising £1,500 for the East Lancashire Hospice, and in 2012 raised £1,500 for the Friends of Chernobyl Children from a 70-mile sponsored walk of the Ribble Way.

The Friends of Chernobyl Children provides disadvantaged children from Chernobyl with holidays in the UK in order to isolate them from ongoing nuclear residue from the infamous Chernobul Nuclear Power Plant explosion.

Tickets for the ceilidh priced £8, which includes supper, are available on 01200 425629 or 01200 429112.
