Best Feet Forward for Bus Buddies

Published Thursday, 22 January 2015

Bus buddies in Ribble Valley are stretching their legs in a series of jaunts to the Yorkshire Dales.

The Bus Buddy scheme, coordinated  by Ribble Valley Borough Council and the Ribble Valley Seniors’ Forum, encourages older people to use buses, shows them how to get the most out of their NOW card, encourages companionship and overcomes isolation.

The “bus buddies” meet roughly once a month at the Platform Gallery in Station Road, Clitheroe, for a quick briefing session, before setting off on a day trip shopping or sightseeing to destinations across Lancashire.

Now they have added a series of walking treks in Yorkshire to their popular programme.

The treks will take place on the last Sunday of each month and warm, waterproof footwear and clothing are required, as well as a packed lunch.

Ribble Valley Borough Council partnership officer Dilys Day said: “The Bus Buddy scheme has been a great success, helping older residents get out and about, and meet new people.

“Now, as well as shopping and sightseeing, participants can stretch their legs in the quiet country lanes of the Yorkshire Dales and non-walkers are welcome, too.”

Forthcoming trips include Skipton Woods on 25 January, Grassington on 22 February, Bolton Abbey on March 29 and Grassington on 26 April. Further details are available from Dilys day on 01200 425111.
