Final Call for ‘People's Peloton’

Published Tuesday, 11 August 2015

Nominations for a ‘people’s peloton’ that will process around Clitheroe town centre prior to the start of Stage 2 the 2015 Aviva Tour of Britain are in top gear.

The world’s top cyclists and tens of thousands of spectators look set to descend on Ribble Valley and Pendle on 7 September for the event, which will see 20 of the world’s top cycling teams, including Olympic and world champions, and Tour de France stage winners, power through the two boroughs on a tough 162km route from Clitheroe to Colne.

The search for community champions and heroes to take part in a People’s Peloton under police escort prior to the start of the top race has attracted considerable interest.

Participants in the People’s Peloton will get a taste of taking part in a major sporting event, as well as recognition for their positive contribution to the Ribble Valley community.

Ribble Valley Borough Council leader Stuart Hirst said: “The Tour of Britain is the most significant event in Ribble Valley’s 40-year history and we want the community to join us in this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

“Rather like the Olympic torchbearers in London 2012, we are looking for Ribble Valley’s unsung heroes and heroines to enjoy their moment in the spotlight.

“The People’s Peloton has certainly captured the public imagination and we have received many excellent nominations, but there is still time to propose your favourite community champion.”

Nominees for the People’s Peloton can be community champions from any walk of life, but they must live in Ribble Valley, have access to a bike, be able to cycle a 1km route around the town centre and be available on Monday, 7 September.

To nominate someone for the People’s Peloton, write in 100 words or so why you think they should take part. The closing date for nominations is Friday, 28 August, and participants will be chosen at random. Nominations must include contact details and can be made at, or by post to Theresa Sanderson, Principal Communications Officer, Ribble Valley Borough Council, Council Offices, Church Walk, Clitheroe, BB7 2RA.
