EU Referendum Voter Registration Deadline Extended

Published Wednesday, 08 June 2016

Ribble Valley residents have until midnight on Thursday 9 June, to register to vote in time for the EU referendum.

A referendum on whether Britain should remain in the European Union, or EU, will take place on Thursday 23 June.

The deadline for registration was originally Tuesday 7 June, but due to technical problems with the Government’s registration portal the deadline has been extended, subject to legislation being passed.

Changes to the way residents registered to vote were introduced last year. Previously, one person in every household was responsible for registering everyone who lived at their address, but under the new system, called individual electoral registration, or IER, each person is now required to register to vote individually.

Registration to vote is quick and easy at gov.uk and all you need is your national insurance number, date of birth and address.

If you can’t vote in person in the referendum, you can vote by proxy – where someone votes on your behalf. The deadline for proxy applications is 5pm on Wednesday 15 June (you and your proxy must both be registered voters).

Further details are available from Ribble Valley Borough Council’s electoral registration team on 01200 414411 or gov.uk.
