Hundreds View Ambitious Market Redevelopment PlansPublished Monday, 25 July 2016
Hundreds of people turned out to view provisional plans for an ambitious £9million redevelopment of Clitheroe Market.
And interest in the scheme is so high that the exhibition is to open late next Tuesday and Thursday (2 and 4 August).
Ribble Valley Borough Council’s policy and finance committee agreed its intention to award the contract to redevelop the 1.4 acre Clitheroe Market site to Nelson contractor, investor and developer Barnfield Construction late last year.
Their three-year scheme featuring a hotel, retail and leisure units, car park and revamped market, will see a new lease of life brought to the site and potential for attracting top new retailers.
Ribble Valley Borough Council’s head of housing and regeneration, Colin Hirst, said: “Hundreds of people have been to see the plans and feedback has been largely constructive and positive, particularly from young families. Some concerns have been expressed, which the developer will certainly take into consideration.
“This scheme constitutes one of the biggest ever private sector investments in Clitheroe town centre and interest has been so high that we are opening the exhibition late on two nights next week.”
Detailed plans for the scheme will be submitted by September and, subject to planning approval, Phase 1 involving the construction of the new market is scheduled to start next spring, with Phase 2 involving the remainder of the site completed by the summer of 2019.
The plans and artists’ impressions will be displayed in the Level C reception at the Ribble Valley Borough Council Offices in Church Walk, Clitheroe, until Friday, 5 August. The Council Offices are open Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, but the Level C reception will remain open until 7pm on Tuesday and Thursday.
