Where does my waste go?
Kerbside collected waste is taken to the council's waste transfer station based at Salthill, Clitheroe. Here, it is loaded into artic trailers, bulked up and transported to facilities as directed by Lancashire County Council.
Burgundy bin
General/non-recyclable waste is transported to one of two waste treatment facilities at Leyland or Thornton operated by Lancashire Renewables. The “Mechanical District” part of the process designed for residual waste processing treats mixed waste using magnets and trommels to produce materials for recycling and energy production.
Blue bin
Your co-mingled dry recycling (blue bin) is also transported to Lancashire Renewables. The “Materials District” part of the process separates the material into individual fractions which is then sold direct to material markets.
Green bin
Green waste is treated via “open windrow” composting. The process produces a nutrient rich multi-purpose compost product. This can be used in soil preparation for garden and turf establishment, as a top dressing, a weed suppressant or soil improving mulch. The product acts as a fertiliser and improves the soil’s physical properties.
Paper/cardboard
Following collection, paper and cardboard is delivered and sold directly to a wastepaper recycling merchant.
