A vigil is to be held at Clitheroe Castle marking two years since the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The castle will be lit in blue and yellow and the flag of Ukraine flown at full mast on the weekend of 24 February.

Local Ukrainians aim to gather at the castle’s Tree for Ukraine to light candles and take part in quiet reflection.

And Ribble Valley Mayor Mark Hindle is inviting people to join him in a show of solidarity with the Ukrainians, comprising a minute’s silence, followed by wishing them ‘Slava Ukraini’ (Glory to Ukraine).

The tree, a species of birch native to Eastern Europe, was planted in the castle grounds overlooking Woone Lane last year.

Ribble Valley Mayor Mark Hindle said: “24 February is the second anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine and we have consulted local Ukrainians on how to mark it.

“They have chosen to gather at the Tree for Ukraine and light candles in a period of quiet reflection and hope.

“And I am inviting townspeople to gather around them and join me in a minute’s silence followed by wishing them ‘Slava Ukraini’ in a gesture of solidarity.

“This will send a clear signal of our enduring support for Ukraine in the face of continued Russian aggression, and mark our respect for the bravery and sacrifice of all Ukrainians.

“We want to show Ukrainians who have found refuge in Ribble Valley that they remain a welcome and valued part of our community.”

Over 80 Ukrainians have found refuge in Ribble Valley since Russia invaded their country.

Ribble Valley Borough Council has appointed a dedicated Ukraine liaison officer, while several community groups and churches have stepped up to support the refugees, notably Trinity Church in Parson Lane, Clitheroe, which hosts a hub for Ukrainians from 10am to noon every second Saturday.

Everyone is welcome to attend the vigil and show their support, which will take place at noon.

The tree is accessible by foot via the Woone Lane entrance to Clitheroe Castle, or by wheelchair and mobility scooter via the Eshton Terrace entrance.

The Ukrainian flag will be flown from a temporary flagpole situated on the curtain wall, while the castle keep undergoes repointing.
