Geology rocks! That’s the message from Clitheroe Castle, which is hosting a free family-friendly, fun-packed geology day on Saturday June 28

Did you know Clitheroe is globally renowned as a site for one particular type of ancient fossil? Did you know that some rocks float? And which is the only rock that humans can eat?

From 11.30am to 3pm you can meet local geologists Barry Roberts, Robin Grayson, Brian Jeffery and Peter del Strother to find the answers.

Stuart Hirst, chairman of Ribble Valley Borough Council’s community services committee, said: “We are delighted to welcome four leading local geologists to Clitheroe Castle for an outstanding day of geology. Young geology enthusiasts are invited to join us for this celebration of geology and its special place in the amazing story of the earth around us.”

Clitheroe Castle Museum manager Claire Sutton added: “Clitheroe Castle is built on limestone rich in fossils and if you look closely you will see crinoids in the walls of the castle buildings. This special event will shed light on the rocks and minerals you see every day, how intricate they are under the microscope and you can challenge experts by bringing your own rock or fossil for identification.”

Entry to Geology Rocks is free and further details are available from the Clitheroe Castle Museum on 01200 424568 or at the Lancashire County Council Events webpage.

Clitheroe Castle Museum is owned by Ribble Valley Borough Council and managed by Lancashire County Council’s Museum Service.

Did you know that for just £25 you can buy an Xplorer family pass that gives you unlimited entry to Clitheroe Castle Museum, the Judges' Lodgings in Lancaster, Gawthorpe Hall in Padiham, Helmshore Mills in Rossendale and Queen Street Mill in Burnley. And don’t forget that Clitheroe Castle Museum has a dedicated geology gallery. Entry to the museum is free for anyone aged 18 or below and £5.10 for adults.
