Half Price Stall Offer Aims to Boost Clitheroe Market

Councillors are recommended to slash charges for a “casual” stall on Clitheroe Market in half to encourage traders to take space.

It’s hoped the 50% discount, which will initially run for a three-month trial period, will attract more businesses to the market and give other existing traders a boost.

If it’s given the green light, the half-price offer would run from February to May and would apply to new and existing traders. It would mean “casual” stalls could be snapped up for as low as £5 a day.

Ribble Valley Borough Council’s health and housing committee is recommended to approve the plan when it meets on 15 January 2026.

Committee chairman Councillor Mark Hindle said:

“The aim is to encourage more traders to take up space on the stalls in the market’s bull-ring and create a bit of a buzz about the place. It will also help support existing traders and perhaps encourage them to take extra space.

“If you’re a small trader, or you’re just starting up in business, or you have a hobby you want to turn into a money-maker, then Clitheroe Market is great place to be.

“We’re always looking out for ways to attract traders to the market so we can fill up the stalls, create a welcoming atmosphere and deliver a wider range of goods and items to visitors.”

The market is open Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.

It has recently undergone a major £200,000 revamp on improvements to the bull-ring stalls, new paving and other works which have improved the overall appearance of the market.

Clitheroe has had a market for 800 years and it is much-loved by regular customers and occasional visitors alike.

The half-price offer would see charges for a casual stall on the bull-ring fall to £12 for a 10ft stall and £10 for an 8ft space on Tuesdays and Saturdays, and £6 and £5 for similar spaces on Thursdays, with further reduction rates for a second stall on all days.
