The Union Jack will be flown at half-mast at Clitheroe Castle throughout the period of national mourning.

Friday, 9 September

Books of Condolence have been opened in the main reception at the Council Offices in Church Walk, Clitheroe, and the Old Station Buildings in Berry Lane, Longridge.

Members of the public are invited to sign them from 8.45am to 5pm at the Council Offices or 10am to 4pm at the Old Station Buildings.

An online Book of Condolence is also available at Buckingham Palace.

Ribble Valley Mayor and Mayoress Stuart and Elaine Hirst laid flowers of remembrance at the entrance to Clitheroe Castle in Castlegate on Friday.

Members of the public are invited to lay flowers at the entrance to Clitheroe Castle, or Vale Gardens in Whalley and Towneley Gardens Longridge.

Flowers will be kept neat and tidy daily by the council’s grounds maintenance staff and removed in accordance with Royal protocol following the Queen’s funeral.

Sunday, 11 September

At 3pm, Ribble Valley Mayor Stuart Hirst read the proclamation of the new monarch, His Majesty King Charles III, at Clitheroe Castle.

Members of the public attended the proclamation, during which the Union Jack was raised.

Period of national mourning

During the period of national mourning, all mayoral engagements and Ribble Valley Borough Council meetings will not take place, but essential council services and care of the elderly and vulnerable will continue, except the day of the Queen’s funeral, which has been declared a public holiday.

The Queen will receive a state funeral on Monday, 19 September, after which the period of national mourning will end.
