Ribble Valley Borough Council today said it was ‘delighted’ by the Government’s announcement that Lancashire is to be divided into four unitary authorities.

And the council is now looking forward to ‘working diligently with partners to deliver a smooth transition to the new authority’, which is yet to be named.

The change will see Ribble Valley combined with Preston and Lancaster, the option unanimously supported by borough councillors.

Councillors feel it will provide a strong rural base, with the Forest of Bowland AONB at its heart, ensuring that the particular needs of rural communities are recognised, and a unique unitary authority, with an outstanding economic and tourism base.

And after a lengthy process, involving public consultation and careful consideration of detailed business cases, the Government has agreed.

Ribble Valley Borough Council leader Simon Hore said:

“We are proud to have delivered high-class, cost-effective services to our residents since the council’s creation in 1974.

“Over the last 50 years, Ribble Valley has become one of the most successful boroughs and visitor destinations in the country, with high customer satisfaction rates and an outstanding record in financial management.

“We have one of the lowest district council taxes in the UK, while being the only authority in Lancashire to collect refuse weekly and not charge for green waste.

“We felt strongly that the four unitary model was in the best interests of Ribble Valley and are delighted that the Government agrees.

“We look forward to working with our partners to deliver a smooth transition to the new authority, which promises an exciting future for our residents and businesses.”

Elections for the new shadow authorities in Lancashire are expected to take place next May, with the authorities taking over services on April 1 2028.

Parish and town councils will not be affected by the proposed changes.
